Door Handing:

Most lever sets require you to determine whether the door is a right-hand or left-hand door (knobs do not require handing)

Door Hardware

·          Stand outside the room or house facing the door. (It does not matter if the door swings in or out.)

·          If the hinges are on the right, it is a right-hand door lever

·          If the hinges are on the left, it is a left-hand door lever

When ordering handlesets and trims, first determine the door handing using the method above. Then, select a lever with the opposite handing for the inside of the door.

Backset:

Backset refers to the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the lock cylinder. Most US doors have backsets of 2 3/8" or 2 3/4". Our locks specify backsets unless otherwise noted, eg.  "Backset Adjustable" or "No Backset".

Bolt - The metal piece that extends and secures a door

Cylinder - The round portion of the lock that accepts the key and enables the locking mechanism

Deadbolt - A lock bolt that is moved by turning a knob or key
A single cylinder deadbolt is most often used on a front or back exterior door and is locked with a key from the outside of the home and a thumbturn on the inside. A double cylinder deadbolt is operated with a key from both the outside and inside of the home. Double cylinder deadbolts are recommended when a window is close to the door. The interior keyway prevents an intruder from breaking the glass and turning the thumbturn to open the door. A one-sided deadbolt has no exterior entry mechanism and a thumbturn on the interior of the door.

Handleset - The exterior door hardware that has a grip or, handle along with a deadbolt funtion to lock the door. When ordering, be sure to also add the corresponding interior 'trim'

Interior Trim - The knob or lever attached to the inside of the door.

Knobset - The door hardware that includes the inside and outside knobs

Latch - The mechanism that secures the door when the door is closed. Most Home Hardware Plus products come standard with an adjustable latch, allowing the hardware to be used on doors with either a 2-3/8" backset or a 2-3/4" backset. (The backset is the measurement from the edge of the door to the center of the predrilled hole.)

Latchplate- The metal sheet that surrounds the bolt and is mounted to the door edge

Leverset - The door hardware that includes the inside and outside levers

Mounting Plate - The mounting plate installs on the inside face of the door and holds the interior door trim in place.

Rose - The plate surrounding the knob or lever that is flush against the door.

Strike - The metal hardware that is mounted to the door frame to receive the latch and/or bolt

Surface Bolt - Hardware that projects into the head of the doorjamb, or into the doorsill. Typically used to secure the inactive leaf in a pair of doors.

Keyed Entry knobs/levers are typically used on exterior doors. Both knobs lock or unlock by a key on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside.

Privacy knobs/levers are typically used for bedroom and bathroom doors. Both knobs lock or unlock by a flat pin key on the outside or thumbturn on the inside.

Passage knobs/levers are typically used for hallway and closet doors. Both knobs are always free to turn.

Dummy knobs/levers are typically used on doors when a simple tug on the door will open it or release a catch. A dummy is a single knob that is stationary on the door and does not provide any turning or latching function.

Storeroom levers are always fixed and locked from the outside and must be unlocked with a key.  The inside knob is always unlocked.

Classroom levers can be locked or unlocked using a key from the outside only.  There is no button or thumbturn on the interior lever.  The lock is always unlocked on the inside.

Are your door knobs and levers sold as complete sets?
Yes, our door knobs are sold with knobs or levers for both sides of the door, a latch mechanism, strike plate, and mounting hardware.  Only dummy knobs and levers are sold individually.

How do I know if your door knobs will work to replace my existing knobs?
The most important measurement you will need to have is the backset.  The door hardware brands that we carry have a backset  of 2 3/8" or 2 3/4". These are standard and should replace any knob or lever set.

How do I know what type of door knob to buy?
Door knobs and levers are available in a variety of styles and functions.  Use this list of functions to help determine what kind of door hardware you need.  When you find one product you are looking for, remember to scroll down to check out the coordinating items. Our website is designed so that you can purchase multiple door hardware applications in similar style and finish- all from the same page.

What size door hinges do I need?
Most homes have standard residential hinges that are 3.5" x 3.5" with  5/8" radius corners (corners shaped like a quarter).  If the hinges have no radius then they are square.  Exterior doors usually have a 4" hinge. The following chart will help you decide what size hinge you need.

Door Thickness Width of Door Hinge Size
1 3/8" To 36" 3.5" x 3.5"
1 3/4" To 36" 4 x 4
2" To 36" 4.5" x 4.5"

Homehardwareplus also carries spring loaded hinges which have a built-in, adjustable spring mechanism that closes the door after it is opened. And, we carry ball bearing hinges that are primarily designed for use on heavy exterior doors and doors that are heavily used.

What door hardware will I need for my French Doors?
Most often French Doors are configured so that one side of the door is fixed and the other operable.  For the operable side you will need one (1) entry, privacy or passage knob/lever and install it with the strike mounted on the edge of the fixed door. You also will need two (2)dummy knobs for each side of the fixed door. Or, for exterior doors, you will need one handleset and one dummy handleset, along with interior trims for both doors.  Lastly, the fixed door is usually held closed by (2) surface bolts.  You will need to measure the length of the bolt to be sure to order the correct size.

What is your return policy?
Homehardwareplus customer service is dedicated to helping you select the right door hardware for your home or project and we are confident that you will be satisfied with your purchase. However, any item (not made-to-order) can be returned within 30 days of receipt.  Shipping charges are non refundable and customer assumes responsibility for return shipping.  Please call customer service at 1-866-231-1681 for a return goods authorization number and instructions.

Will the door hardware finishes from Homehardwareplus match my current door hardware?
Different door hardware brands use the same names for their finishes; but, that does not necessarily mean they will all match exactly.  Among most brands the finishes should be close enough to look consistant throughout a house. The variations will be most  noticeable if the door hardware is right next to each other.

How are your locks made?
Our Sterling and Sterling Plus product lines are made from industry standard zinc die cast.  They are constructed of all metal parts, solid steel 1/4" spindle and keyed locks use a five (5) pin keyway.

Our Sapphire product line is manufactured from solid forged brass and superior quality materials.
